Total time: 1 hr 10 min
Yield: 16 3 1/2 inch squares

Ingredients:

1 c water
1 1/2 Tbsp oil
1 Tbsp sugar
1 pkg yeast
3-3 1/2 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
Oil for frying

Directions:

  • In a 2-cup glass cup, combine water, oil, sugar, and yeast. Set aside for 5 min for yeast to dissolve.
  • In medium bowl, combine 3 c flour with salt and yeast mixture and stir until soft dough forms, adding more flour if needed to make dough manageable.
  • On lightly-floured surface, knead dough 6 to 8 times. Invert bowl over ball and let rest for about 45 min.
  • In large skillet, heat 1 in oil to 375 degrees. On floured surface, with rolling pin roll out dough in a 14-in square. Cut into 16 3 1/2 in squares. Fry dough squares until golden, about 3 min. Drain on paper towels.
